What I Learned About Safety After Getting Followed in Paris?

Until the night someone followed me through the small-town cobblestone alleys of Paris, I always thought the city was lovely.

My love of traveling solo and my anxiety met that night, but I also learned things I wish I had known sooner.

This tale is meant for women who enjoy traveling solo.

A Dream Evening Turned Into a Wake-Up Call

I was in Paris on my third day of traveling solo. I had spent the afternoon drinking espresso by the Seine and the morning at the Musée d'Orsay.

I made the decision to take a leisurely stroll along the Canal Saint-Martin as golden hour drew near.

This area is popular with people since it is attractive, serene, and seemingly "safe."

That's what I thought, anyway.

The Moment I Realized I Was Being Followed

When I was leaving a little bookstore, I saw a man standing behind me. I didn't give it much thought at first. In the crowded city of Paris, people always stroll in the same direction.

But it continued. at the intersection. Around a bend. In a small bakery. He was always there, just near enough to make me nervous every time I glanced over my shoulder.

I rushed. His did as well. I screamed. My heart pounded. And I was certain, I wasn't dreaming.

How a Local Woman Helped Me Feel Safe Again?

I went into a little café and looked directly at the woman behind the counter in an effort to think clearly. "I think someone is following me," I said in a whisper as I approached, trying not to cry.

She escorted me behind the counter right away, gave me water, and stayed by my side until the man left. She then dialed a cab and waited with me until I got inside safely.

Not only did that stranger save my night, but she additionally rebuilt my sense of responsibility.

7 Safety Lessons Every Solo Female Traveler Should Know

I don't tell this story to discourage ladies from traveling solo. I share it because we should have the freedom and security to travel the world.

1. Always Trust Your Intuition

Don't question yourself if anything seems strange. The gut is there to keep you safe.

2. Wear Confidence, Not Just a Cute Outfit

Being confident is about being there, not simply about looking good. Even if you're not sure where you're headed, act as though you do.

3. Keep Emergency Phrases Handy

Learn local words such as,

Aidez-moi! (Help me!)

Appelez la police! (Call the police!)

You can either save them to your phone or write them down.

4. Avoid Distractions While Walking Alone

Being mindful of your surroundings is the first step to remaining safe, regardless how tempting it may be to text a friend or listens to a podcast.

5. Have a “Safe Place” Strategy

Quick safe havens can be found in coffee shops, motels, pharmacies, and even major retailers like Monoprix. If you feel unsafe, duck in.

6. Share Your Live Location With Someone You Trust

Your loved ones can feel more relaxed using apps like Life360 or WhatsApp location sharing, which could also be a lifesaver in an emergency.

7. Don’t Be Afraid to Speak Up or Ask for Help

Speak up, whether it's a barista, a hotel staff, or a complete stranger. You're never "overreacting" when it comes to your safety.

Paris Is Still Beautiful - But I See It Differently Now

My journey wasn't defined by that night. Yet, I wouldn't be telling the truth if I claimed it didn't change my solo female travel style.

I now carry pepper spray (where it's permitted), plan my route ahead of time, and have complete faith in myself.

For Every Woman Traveling Solo - This Is Your Reminder

You have strength. You're intelligent. You're free to occupy space and aggressively defend it.
Do not postpone your vacation. But be ready.

You have the right to travel the world and do it in safety.

Be courageous, be mindful, and never be scared to tell your story, it could save another woman's life.

Safe travels,
